Empowering Youth for a Sustainable Future Through Solar Energy Training
Skills for Climate-Resilient Livelihoods
Across Zambia, Malawi, and Zimbabwe, the Salesians of Don Bosco are transforming lives by equipping disadvantaged youth with the skills needed to thrive in a changing climate. Their TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) initiative promotes renewable energy education and environmental stewardship, aligning with the principles of Laudato Si’ and Misean Cara’s strategy for sustainable development.
The project offers specialised training in solar (photovoltaic) technology in four TVET institutions and integrates environmental education into six secondary schools. By building capacity in solar installation and maintenance, young people are gaining access to green employment opportunities or the tools to start their own businesses—helping both livelihoods and the planet.
Green Clubs and Environmental Education
To foster awareness and action, participating schools have established Green Clubs that engage students in ecological activities such as solar energy demonstrations, waste management, and tree planting. These clubs promote the Right to a Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment while cultivating youth leadership in environmental advocacy.
Through these efforts, the project not only addresses unemployment but also strengthens environmental consciousness and supports communities in adopting more sustainable practices.
Sustainable Futures, Inspired by Faith
By linking education, livelihood creation, and environmental responsibility, the Salesians’ initiative embodies the call of Laudato Si’—to care for our common home. It empowers youth to take part in the green economy, transforming vulnerability into opportunity and shaping future leaders in climate resilience.

“As someone who has always been passionate about green and clean energy, being part of this project has been a remarkable journey. The Solar Skills Training has equipped me with practical knowledge that aligns with my vision for a sustainable future. Being appointed as the Matron of the Green Teens Club at St. Dominic Savio Secondary School is both an honour and a responsibility I’m excited to embrace. I look forward to guiding and supporting the next generation of environmental leaders, working together to promote renewable energy and create lasting change in our community.”

“As a participant in the Solar Skills Trainer of Trainers Training for Instructors, this project has truly transformed my life. Before, I had little understanding of renewable energy, but now, I’ve gained hands-on experience in Solar PV technology. I feel empowered to not only pursue a career in this growing field but also to be an advocate for environmental sustainability in my community. The skills learned will enable me to help the students understand the importance of this cheap source of energy, especially with the growing demand for such skills amidst the power shortage in Zambia. The skills I’ve learned here have given me confidence and hope for a brighter future, and I’m proud to be part of something that’s making a real difference for our planet.”
