Protecting Dignity and Human Rights in the Face of Trafficking:
Join Misean Cara on Tuesday, December 6th from 9am-12pm when we will host a seminar at the Wood Quay Venue, Dublin on ‘Protecting Dignity and Human Rights in the Face of Trafficking.
The event, supported by Irish Aid, will be a presentation and discussion of the issues that continue to drive the prevalence of human trafficking around the world, with a key focus on examining the opportunities for reducing vulnerabilities to human trafficking and putting dignity and rights at the front of anti-trafficking efforts.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Sr. Imelda Poole, IBVM (Loreto Sisters), MBE
Sr Imelda Poole, a native of Great Britain, is a sister of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM) on mission in Albania for 17 years. Sr Imelda is President of the NGO called Mary Ward Loreto (MWL) and Chair of Trustees of Religious in Europe Networking Against Trafficking and Exploitation (RENATE), a network of European women religious from 21 countries working to combat human trafficking. In this role, Sr. Imelda has traveled throughout Europe, mentoring and training others and becoming a leading spokesperson for anti-trafficking initiatives in Europe. In 2022 a new Foundation in England called Mary Ward Loreto UK, was founded to sustain the mission in Albania and support cross-border work against human trafficking between the UK and Albania. Imelda Poole IBVM has received the MBE Award on behalf of all of her colleagues who work in this field to sustain human rights in the mission against human trafficking. She also received the 2021 TIP Hero Award from the US Government State Department on behalf of the same.
George Tetteh of the Salesians of Don Bosco, Ghana (joining online), offers a West African perspective on Human Trafficking from his experience working as a missionary and lessons learned from working to rehabilitate and reintegrate survivors of trafficking. George works directly in communities where trafficking victims are sourced, to identify and address the root economic causes and lack of opportunity that drive trafficking.
Jody Clarke, Senior External Relations Associate with UNHCR Ireland will present on the challenges and opportunities that exist for reducing vulnerabilities to human trafficking, raising awareness with potential victims of trafficking and mobilising communities to identify and impede trafficking.
Sr Abby, the International Coordinator of Talitha Ku (joining online). Established in 2009 with the International Union of Superiors General (UISG) as an international initiative against human trafficking and exploitation, Talitha Kum promotes collaboration among networks organized at national, regional and continental level, actively supporting victims, survivors and people at risk.
Talitha Kum translates to “Little girl, I say to you, rise up” and comes from the Gospel of Mark (5:41)
