Samples of the regional range and variety of development work of missionaries

Argentina
(Urban Community Development)

Provision of community assistance centre and programme in which children, adolescents and their parents can drop in, receive education and health care from professionals. This addresses the following difficulties - school desertion, adolescent pregnancy, sexually transmitted illnesses, HIV/AIDS, drug and alcohol addiction, abuse and violence, and conflict with the police.

Chile
(Urban Community Development)

Provision of community centre services in Santa Emilia including educational support for young people in the community with learning difficulties, training development of women and support in setting up micro-enterprises, provision of alternative educational services, counselling, training for independent living, personal support services, providing health education and hygiene, basic medical treatment, relaxation techniques and an holistic approach to living.

Peru
(Primary Healthcare)

Provision of a drug rehabilitation programme to aid 105 youths and adult males and their families whose lives have been devastated as a result of addiction. A core aim is to increase the number of youth and men in the detoxification phase of drug rehabilitation to 60, and the end goal being vocational training and reunification with families.

Brazil
(Human Rights)

Continued work with youth - male and female 18-25 years old and women groups primarily African Brazilians, descendants of the slave trade in Brazil. Promotion of personal development of African Brazilian women by raising the self esteem of this marginalised group. This is supported by campaigning against domestic violence, teaching problem solving techniques and conflict resolution, and raising awareness of their human rights.

Colombia
(Basic Education)

Implementing a programme for the continual training for self-employment of women, aged 12 - 60 years with special needs and their mothers from over 80 families. The skills acquired in jewellery making, handcrafts and computer servicing will enable them to be self employed, thus achieving betterment of their situation of poverty and social marginalisation.
