misean cara Chairperson departs for Haiti to step up humanitarian relief effort

24th January 2010

The Chairperson of misean cara, Sr Maeve Guinan, departed for Haiti today to deliver much needed emergency aid to members who are working in the capital of Port-au-Prince.

misean cara has allocated a sum of €15,000 in emergency funding to support the Sisters of St Joseph of Cluny in their distribution of medication, clothes and money in Port-au-Prince.

Aid has also been donated by local pharmacies, pupils of the Sister of Saint Joseph of Cluny schools, as well as parents, teachers, friends of the organisation and other Congregations.

Sr Maeve, who is also the Provincial Leader of the Sisters of St Joseph of Cluny (SJC) in Ireland, is joined by Sr Louis Marie O'Connor (SJC) during her brief visit to Haiti. As part of the trip, Sr Maeve will also be surveying the current post-quake relief efforts taking place.

The Sisters of St Joseph of Cluny have been in Haiti since 1864. Two schools have been completely destroyed and a medical dispensary has also collapsed. Hundreds of injured people are approaching the sisters there for help.

Some sisters have been injured but the organisation has not sustained any fatalities. To make a donation to the sisters please go to http://www.sjc.ie/content/view/54.
