Emergency Funding made available to Misean Cara members in Haiti

14th January 2010

Emergency funding has been made available by Misean Cara for members in Haiti who are providing humanitarian aid to those left most vulnerable, following a major earthquake that took place on Tuesday January 12th.

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake, the most powerful to strike the capital Port-Au-Prince in two centuries, shook the earth for one minute.

The devastation, according to reports, was instant with major buildings including hospitals, schools, parliamentary buildings and aid offices collapsing around the city.

The International Red Cross estimated 45,000 to 50,000 were killed in the quake on Tuesday. About three million people, one third of Haiti's population were hurt or left homeless by the earthquake.

At present, Misean Cara supports three member organisations based in Haiti through Personnel Funding, including lay missionary organisation Viatores Christi, as well as the Religious of Jesus and Mary and La Sainte Union.

Each member organisation has been contacted by Misean Cara and have confirmed that their personnel on the ground are safe.
